Why Writing Matters: Connecting Classroom Writing to Real Life

Before this writing course, I honestly looked at writing as something we did only to pass an assignment. I never stopped to think about how often I actually use writing every single day. As we explored the writing process and practiced different types of writing in class, I slowly began to understand that writing is not just a school task but it’s a life skill. Writing helps us to communicate, express our feelings, solve problems, and connect with others, both inside and outside the classroom.

One of the biggest lessons I learned is that clear writing leads to clear thinking. Whenever I take the time to brainstorm, plan, and organize my ideas, I find that I understand my message much better. This doesn’t just help me with essays but it also helps me write clearer messages and emails. Instead of typing the first thing that comes to mind, I now think about how someone else will read and understand what I’m saying. Writing has taught me to slow down, choose my words carefully, and express myself confidently.

Writing also plays a big role in our everyday interactions. Whether we’re texting a friend, messaging a teacher, or sending a professional email, the way we write affects how people respond to us. A simple misunderstanding can come from unclear wording or missing details. Because of this course, I’ve learned how important it is to write with purpose. I now think about tone, clarity, and detail, even in short messages. It’s surprising how small changes in writing can create more positive conversations.

Another way writing connects to real life is through reflection. When I write about my experiences, I learn more about myself like what I’m good at, what I need to improve, and how I feel about different situations. Writing has become a tool for personal growth. Whether I’m journaling or reflecting on class activities, putting my thoughts on paper helps me organize my emotions and make better decisions. As a future teacher, I know this will help me guide my students and model healthy expression.

Most importantly, writing helps us connect with others. Stories, descriptions, and personal reflections allow us to share who we are. Through our blog, I’ve realized how writing can build community. Each post allows us to learn more about each other’s experiences as growing writers. This kind of connection is something I want my future students to experience. A space where writing helps them understand themselves and others.

Overall, this course has shown me that writing is not just an academic requirement; it’s a life-long skill that helps us communicate, connect, reflect, and grow. Writing matters because it follows us everywhere like in everyday conversations, in professional spaces, and in our personal journeys. My goal moving forward is to continue developing my writing skills and, one day, help my students discover the real-life power of writing too.

From Uncertain to Understanding

Before I came to this Reading and Writing class, I never thought of myself as a good writer. I often second-guessed my work because I didn’t feel it was good enough for others to read. Whenever it was time to write, I would always have a hard time finding things to say about the topics I chose. Reflecting on my first day of writing, I can say that our lecturer did an excellent job of outlining the proper stages of the writing process and encouraging me to take my time with each step.              One of the most important things I learnt on this journey is that every piece of writing needs proper structure and planning . Writers should use strategies, organizational patterns, or even graphic organizers in every writing piece because these tools shape HOW the writing develops. The “how” of writing refers to  - HOW a writer generates his/her ideas, -  HOW the writer develops their writing,  - HOW the wr...
